Summer Outdoor Living Dubai: How to Style the Perfect Terrace

To be honest, most terraces in Dubai are used at about a third of their potential. People bring out a couple of chairs, set up a folding table, and think they’ve got a “terrace.” But that’s not really living on a terrace - it’s just storing furniture outdoors.

We’ve been working with interiors and outdoor spaces for years, and we know for sure: a properly designed terrace is the most valuable feature a Dubai apartment or villa can have on warm days. And with the right furniture choices, you can even escape the city’s hustle and bustle on summer evenings. This isn’t about expensive designer solutions, but rather about understanding how your space works.

Want to learn how to zone your terrace for different purposes? And what furniture to choose, given the climate? How to design the space for everyday use and for parties, and which materials will survive the Dubai summer unscathed? We’ll tell you all about this and even more right now!

Zoning Your Terrace: Dining Area, Lounge Area, and How to Connect Them

You need to start with the layout. Most terraces require two distinct zones - a dining area and a lounge area. Not because the rules say so, but because they serve fundamentally different purposes.

The dining area is built around an outdoor dining table and outdoor dining chairs. As a rule, this is where people eat and talk. The lounge area is all about an outdoor sofa, armchairs, and a coffee table. It’s the place where evenings begin and end. This division is the foundation of any well-designed outdoor dining space.

How do you combine them? Since there are practically no walls in such spaces, you need to delineate the areas visually. This means you can place rugs under each zone to mark the boundaries visually. It’s best to leave about 100-120 cm between the zones for a walkway.

If your terrace is less than 15 square meters, we recommend choosing just one zone. A more versatile option would be a lounge with an outdoor sofa, where you can both relax and eat. Terraces measuring 15-30 square meters can accommodate both zones, but if it’s larger, you can add additional elements such as a lounge chair, a hanging chair, or a bar table.

The main rule: each zone should feel like a separate room while maintaining a unified aesthetic. This is what transforms a random collection of furniture into a thoughtfully designed space.

Choosing an Outdoor Sofa and Armchairs: The Lounge Zone

The outdoor sofa is the heart of the lounge zone. This is where most of your time on the terrace is spent: morning coffee, evening conversations, quiet hours with a book. Place it along the longest wall or railing.

One of our favorite options is the Sophia 2-Seater Outdoor Sofa made of solid teak. Teak is the ideal material for Dubai’s open terraces: it doesn’t crack, warp, or fear direct sunlight or humidity. A true classic that only gets more beautiful with time.

The sofa needs at least one outdoor armchair, or better yet, two (if space allows). They create a conversation area and add visual depth to the space. For compact balconies, the Lounge Chair with Macrame works perfectly; it’s visually light and doesn’t overwhelm the space. An outdoor armchair paired with a sofa creates a full-fledged open-air living room.

For convenience, add a coffee table; we recommend placing it about 35-45 cm from the edge of the sofa. We love modern options: the Etera Concrete Coffee Table or the more compact Celeste Coffee Table. Concrete is heavy, so it won’t blow away in the wind, and it looks sculptural next to wood or rattan. But if you prefer, you can choose a set that matches the sofa.

For coziness, add 2-4 cushions to the outdoor sofa in neutral tones - sand, cream, terracotta. Casually drape a throw over the edge of the sofa; this will create a lively yet cozy terrace feel.

Outdoor Dining Table and Chairs: The Dining Zone

Now for the dining area. The right outdoor dining table is not just a table for the outdoors. It’s a place where people gather, and the shape matters here.

A round outdoor dining table for four people is our top choice for most terraces. Everyone sits facing each other, making conversation flow more easily. The minimum diameter is approximately 120 cm. If the group is slightly larger, a round outdoor dining table with a diameter of 140-150 cm easily seats six while remaining compact. For 8 guests, it’s better to opt for a rectangular outdoor dining table measuring 220×100 cm. In any case, leave at least 80 cm of clearance around the table so chairs can be pulled back freely.

Materials: Teak is the gold standard for outdoor dining furniture in Dubai. It doesn’t crack, swell, or warp, and ages beautifully. Concrete is monumental and heavy - set it down and forget about it. Rattan offers warmth and beauty, but is only suitable for covered terraces.

For outdoor dining chairs, we offer several solutions to suit different needs. The Angelo Rattan Dining Chair works equally well indoors and outdoors. The Oslo Rattan Dining Chair is perfect for those who appreciate the details. Every outdoor dining chair in our collection was designed with Dubai’s real climate in mind, so you don’t have to worry about quality.

Here’s a tip we often recommend: place the outdoor armchair at the ends of the outdoor dining table, and the outdoor dining chairs along the long sides. This creates a cohesive, “curated” look. This is what true outdoor dining is all about - not just eating outside, but creating an atmosphere. This is what outdoor dining in Dubai should be: a space you want to spend time in.

Styling and Outdoor Decor: Everyday vs. Entertaining

There are two modes: everyday and “guests are coming.”

Keep things minimal for everyday use. Leave only a few items on the coffee table, just for decoration. On the outdoor dining table, leave a linen runner and a single low bouquet or dried flowers. Outdoor decoration shouldn’t look like it’s set up for a photo shoot; it should feel lively and effortless.

When guests arrive, add layers: placemats, linen napkins, and groups of candles along the runner. Outdoor decoration in the form of rattan lanterns and low candlesticks on the lounge floor creates an atmosphere that keeps people lingering until midnight.

One rule for any outdoor decoration: it should look as if it just happened to be there. But don’t forget that nothing taller than 30 cm should be placed on the outdoor dining table, otherwise you simply won’t be comfortable conversing.

Lighting a Terrace: Pendants, Lanterns, and Candles

Outdoor lighting is what separates a terrace you step out onto once a week from one you want to return to every evening.

Hang a pendant light about 70-80 cm above the surface of the outdoor dining table on a covered terrace. We really love the Evelyn Long Hanging Shell Chandelier - its organic shape and warm light look equally beautiful above the dinner table and simply as a standalone piece in the space.

In the lounge area, a floor lamp next to the sofa or between outdoor armchairs will look more flattering - and that cozy corner appears, the very reason you’ll want to step out onto the terrace after sunset.

The light temperature is approximately 2700K, a warm white. A cool light tone automatically makes the terrace feel uninviting. Proper outdoor lighting isn’t just “enough to see.” It’s about how the space feels after 8 p.m.

Materials That Survive Dubai Summers

Dubai’s climate doesn’t forgive mistakes in material selection. We work with various materials and know exactly which options are best suited for Dubai’s climate:

  • Teak. This is the best all-around option for outdoor dining furniture and lounge furniture. Direct sun, rain, humidity - it withstands it all. Oil it once a year, or simply let it weather to a silvery patina. Suitable for outdoor dining tables, sofas, and armchairs.

  • Rattan. This material is all about warmth and beauty, but it’s best suited for covered terraces. If there are heavy downpours, it’s better to keep it covered.

  • Concrete. This material is indestructible and heavy. Once installed, it lasts for years without maintenance. But its advantage is also a drawback for some - it’s heavy.

When it comes to textiles, it’s best to choose UV-resistant fabric. This rule applies to outdoor dining chairs, sofa cushions, and all soft furnishings without exception. This is especially true for every outdoor dining chair on an open terrace.

A well-designed outdoor dining area in Dubai is a long-term investment. With the right choices, your outdoor dining space in Dubai will last 10+ years.

Building a Complete Terrace: Step by Step

Let’s put it all together. Here’s the sequence we recommend:

  1. Mark out the zones - dining and lounge.

  2. Place an outdoor sofa - the anchor of the lounge area.

  3. Add an outdoor armchair - one or two on either side of the sofa.

  4. Set up a round outdoor dining table or a rectangular outdoor dining table in the center of the dining area.

  5. Arrange outdoor dining chairs - 4 to 8, depending on the table.

  6. Place a rug under each zone.

  7. Add cushions to everything - the sofa, armchairs, and every outdoor dining chair.

  8. Style the table - a runner, coasters, and a centerpiece.

  9. Outdoor lighting - a pendant light over the table, a floor lamp by the sofa, and lanterns around the perimeter.

  10. Final touches for outdoor decoration - a potted palm tree, an olive tree, ceramics, and rattan lanterns.
