Bar stools sit higher than counter stools: a 75-80 cm seat for a bar or high island of 105-110 cm. Anything lower belongs in counter stools, where the seat sits at 61-68 cm for a standard 90-95 cm kitchen counter.

Measure from the floor to the underside of your bar top rather than to the surface,because a thick worktop changes the answer by several centimetres. What you want is a gap of 25-30 cm between the seat and the counter: less and your legs are trapped, more and you are reaching up to eat. Your counter also needs around 25-30 cm of overhang for knees.

Allow 60 cm of bar per stool, measured centre to centre, so a 180 cm island takes three comfortably rather than four.
