Concrete vs. Travertine Coffee Tables: Which Stone Works Best in a Dubai Home

Stone has long ceased to be an unusual choice in local interiors. But while “stone” used to mean marble in interior design, it now competes with significantly cheaper alternatives like travertine and concrete. Light-colored floors, plenty of natural light, and a preference for calm, textured surfaces - all these factors point toward choosing a stone surface, especially for a frequently used piece like a coffee table.

In photos, concrete and travertine look almost identical, with only a slight shade difference. But in a room, they look quite different. Therefore, before choosing a coffee table in Dubai, it’s worth understanding how they differ:

Concrete is more uniform, cooler in tone, and more resilient to scratches and chips, making it a better fit for families with children or those who love to entertain guests.

Travertine is lighter and warmer (though it also comes in silvery shades), with natural pores in its pattern, but it’s more stain-prone. As a stone coffee table, it works best in a quiet living room with minimal risk of staining.

But to make the right choice, ask yourself three questions. How often do you move the table? Are there children in the house? And what is the room missing: warmth or contrast? Below, we’ll take a closer look at weight, care, price, and dimensions for apartments and villas.

What Each Material Actually Is

The main difference begins at the production stage: concrete is poured into a mold, while travertine is cut from natural stone. This determines everything else: shape, pattern, weight, and maintenance.

Concrete is a cast material. The shape isn’t carved but poured. That’s why a concrete coffee table can have rounded edges, ribbed sides, and a seamless, solid base (which carved stone doesn’t allow for). Our Handmade Monet Round Side Table, with its grooved sides, is a good example of an unusual shape. As for color, it can vary in shade, but most often it’s uniform: white, gray, or black. The surface is either polished or coated with a protective finish.

Travertine is a natural limestone formed near mineral springs. It is cut from a single block, which explains its characteristic pores and soft streaks in the pattern. Because it’s a natural material, you’ll never find two pieces with the same pattern.

Cast concrete is homogeneous, so that a concrete side table will match a coffee table from the same series exactly. A travertine side table, on the other hand, will never be an exact duplicate of another. For some, this is the whole point; for others, it’s a problem. That’s why travertine works especially well in standalone pieces where the stone’s pattern is the main decorative feature: a single coffee table or a single console table.

And let’s be honest about the weight. Both materials are heavy, but for the same size, cast concrete may feel heavier.

How Each One Behaves in Daily Use

Concrete. Coated with a protective layer, it’s wear-resistant and can easily handle hot cups and plates. Fine dust is less visible on it than on a dark polished surface.

But if you drop something heavy on a sharp corner, a concrete table might chip, revealing a lighter-colored material underneath. The good news is that you can repair the chip. And if you have a dog at home, concrete is also more practical: water bowls and accidental claw scratches are hardly a problem.

Travertine. It’s softer than it seems and naturally porous. If you don’t wipe it down in time, a travertine coffee table will absorb oil, wine, coffee, and citrus juice. And acidic liquids can leave dull stains even through the protective layer. That’s no reason to avoid it, though. You just need to understand what you’re buying: travertine loves coasters and quick wiping. Our advice: keep a tray on your concerete table. You can place cups, candles, and remotes on it, while the stone stays clean.

There’s also a third point that people often realize too late: temperature. In an air-conditioned room, both materials feel pleasantly cool to the touch. But next to a panoramic window in direct sunlight, both will heat up, so resting your hand or a cup on such a table at noon will be uncomfortable.

Color, Light, and How Each Appears in a Room

Now, let’s talk about shades. Travertine comes in beige, cream, and sand shades. That’s why a travertine coffee table immediately adds warmth to a neutral room and pairs naturally with rattan, oak, linen, and bouclé; in other words, with the palette already found in most homes here.

Concrete is cooler and more graphic, especially in gray and black. It adds contrast to a soft, cozy room. White concrete falls somewhere in between. By the way, a dark ceramic vase looks especially beautiful on a light travertine: against its backdrop, the stone seems even warmer.

In a small room, the difference is especially noticeable. A light travertine countertop blends into the light-colored floor, making the compact living room feel larger. A black concrete side table, such as the Aurora Black, becomes a deliberate focal point and requires open space around it.

A rule for combining materials that we’re constantly asked about:

  • One type of stone per room looks well-thought-out

  • Two different types of stone look like an unfinished renovation

  • Stone plus wood plus rattan always works

The easiest way to make a seating area look cohesive is to use the same finish for the coffee table and the side table next to the sofa in Dubai.

Sizing and Placement in an Apartment

The measurements are the same as in our other guides:

  • The length of the coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of the sofa

  • The height should be 40 to 45 cm, at seat level or slightly lower

  • 40 to 45 cm between the edge of the table and the sofa

  • Side table at armrest height, usually 55 to 65 cm

But stone has its own peculiarity: its weight changes the layout. For example, a concrete coffee table with a small base exerts pressure on the floor at a single point. Place felt pads under the base to protect tile and hardwood floors. If your building has floor weight restrictions, check with the property management company.

Now, about delivery; it can catch you off guard. Stone furniture is heavy when it arrives and is often carried by two people. Measure the elevator and hallway in advance, and confirm whether delivery includes carrying the piece into the room. We’ve detailed how to measure everything correctly in our recent article.

Round tables suit compact rooms and families with small children better: they don’t have corners at a child’s head level. If you’re choosing a coffee table in Dubai for an apartment with a toddler, start with round ones.

Apartments and villas differ significantly in this regard. In a villa’s large living room, you can afford a massive rectangular table or a pair of round tables of different heights placed side by side. In an apartment, a single round or oval table plus a side table next to the sofa usually works best.

And one last thing. Before choosing a side table in Dubai for your apartment, measure the doorway. You won’t be able to move a stone table out of the way with your foot as easily as a lightweight rattan one.

Care: Sealing, Cleaning, and What Not to Do

This is where the materials differ the most, so let’s be honest. Both are coated with a protective sealant, but both sealants wear off over time.

Concrete. Wipe down your concrete coffee table with a damp cloth and mild soap. Reapply the protective coating about once a year, depending on how often you use the table. It’s easy to check if it’s time: drip a little water onto the surface. If the drop beads up, the protection is still intact. If it soaks in and leaves a dark stain, it’s time to reapply. Don’t use abrasive sponges; they’ll dull the surface.

Travertine. The same care routine, plus one rule that’s more important than all the others: wipe up stains immediately. This is especially true for oil, wine, coffee, and anything citrus-based, because the pores absorb these substances faster than you’d think.

What you MUST NOT do with travertine under any circumstances:

  • Wipe with vinegar

  • Clean with lemon juice

  • Use bathroom limescale removers

Acid permanently corrodes limestone, and you can’t restore a travertine coffee table to its original appearance after that.

Fine dust settles in Dubai every day. If you drag a dusty rag across any surface, fine scratches will appear and be mistaken for flaws in the material. First, brush off the dust with a soft, dry cloth (or a lint roller, which attracts dust rather than spreading it), then wipe with a damp cloth.

Price, Value, and Where Marble Fits In

Cast concrete is usually more affordable than travertine of the same size: it’s poured into a mold rather than quarried and cut. Travertine’s price includes the cost of the block, cutting, and waste.

But both materials are cheaper than marble. Marble is harder and glossier, absorbs stains just as easily as travertine, and costs the most. Therefore, it makes more sense for a small countertop than for a large surface.

Now, here’s an argument for stone in general. A good stone coffee table never goes out of style, doesn’t swell from humidity, doesn’t require sanding or repainting like wood, and will easily outlast two or three sofa replacements. The same applies to outdoor or dining room tables, where a concrete table doesn’t require annual oil treatment like a wooden one does.

The advice is simple: choose the material that suits your family. On the first day, both look equally good, but the difference becomes apparent by year three. If budget is the deciding factor, concrete offers more size for the same money, while travertine offers more character.

Which One to Choose, and Where to Buy

A quick cheat sheet:

  • Kids or frequent guests: concrete

  • A calm, adult living room with a warm color palette: travertine

  • A small, dark room that needs contrast: black or gray concrete

  • A small, light room that needs an airy feel: light travertine

  • If you’re unsure: choose coffee and side tables made from the same material, without mixing materials

Before ordering, confirm the exact dimensions and weight, whether the table arrives as a single piece or in two parts, whether the tabletop has been treated with a protective coating at the factory, and what’s included in the delivery. Our Home and Soul store offers a wide selection of coffee tables with delivery throughout the UAE, and you can check the dimensions and weight with us before ordering. Or visit our showroom and feel both materials with your own hands; it’s the best way to understand the difference.

If you already have a coffee table, a side table is a logical addition. A white concrete side table like the Aurora White or a warm travertine side table transforms any coffee table in Dubai into a complete relaxation area.

Both materials will outlast almost everything else in the room. So the choice here is about how you live, not about what looks best in a photo.
