Everyone who lives in Dubai knows this, but almost no one plans. For seven months, the terrace sits unused, and then suddenly it becomes the best room in the apartment. From November through March, life literally moves outdoors. And almost everyone rushes to buy furniture for it during that first cool week.
We see it differently. For us, outdoor furniture in Dubai is first and foremost about durability in outdoor conditions. Whatever you buy will be used for five months and sit idle on a scorching balcony for seven months.
First, buy seating, then a table, then shade, and only lastly, lighting. And choose each item based on whether it will survive a Dubai summer, and only then pay attention to how it looks in photos taken in November.
Let’s break down when the season begins, the order to shop, what can withstand summer, the differences between a terrace, a balcony, and a garden, and what you shouldn’t waste money on. This applies to both apartments and those looking for garden furniture Dubai for a villa; you’ll find it at Home and Soul.
When the Dubai Outdoor Season Actually Starts
In reality, evenings become comfortable around the end of October; the peak season runs from November through March; and by the end of April, the terrace is closed until fall. That leaves a window of about five months, and this changes how you should approach your purchase.
A common mistake: people buy furniture in December or January and pay full price for items they’ll use for only eight weeks. Buying at the start of the season doubles the value you get for your money.
But there’s also a local detail that very few people actually consider. October evenings are warm, but the humidity is still high. Cushions left outside overnight during the first few weeks don’t dry completely, and that’s when mold starts to grow. But how can you avoid these mistakes? Buy the right furniture, textiles, and decor!
There’s no need to rush to the store right away; you probably still have some things left over from last year. So take a look at what you already have. Maybe your outdoor furniture from Dubai from last year is still in good condition and will easily last another year. But if your cushions were ordinary ones not designed for outdoor use, you’ll most likely have to replace them.
Buy in This Order: Seating, Table, Shade, Lighting
Once you know what you have and what you don’t, it’s time to shop. There’s a specific order to follow so you don’t spend a large sum all at once - buying all the furniture in one go can be a financial strain. Start with the essentials and gradually move on to the secondary elements:
-
First: seating. It sets the scale for everything else. For a patio, choose a two- or three-seater outdoor sofa; for a balcony where a sofa won’t fit, use two armchairs. We have plenty of outdoor seating options, including rattan outdoor furniture, so you can choose what fits your space.
-
Second: the table. A low outdoor coffee table is perfect for relaxing with drinks, while a dining-height table is ideal for full dinners. On most terraces here, there’s room for only one or the other. So decide what the space is for first, then place your order.
-
Third: shade. This step is most often overlooked, and people end up regretting it. A west-facing terrace without shade is unusable until 4:00 p.m., even in January. So if space allows, we recommend considering an umbrella with a heavy, stable base.
-
Fourth: lighting. Many people mistakenly believe that if a terrace is well-lit by natural light, additional lighting isn’t necessary. But this is a serious misconception, since the whole family often gathers in the evenings, and soft (not bright) lighting can enhance the cozy atmosphere.
For dimensions, we recommend leaving 75 to 90 cm of clear space around the furniture, from its edge to the railing or wall. Otherwise, a furnished patio will appear smaller than an empty one.

What Survives a Dubai Summer, and What Does Not
Not all materials are well-suited for outdoor use, so it’s better to choose the right option from the start rather than having to replace it later:
-
Powder-coated aluminum. The most reliable frame: it doesn’t rust and remains light enough to move around.
-
Teak. It withstands the summer well if treated with oil. Without oil, it turns silvery, but this is only a visual change and doesn’t indicate any damage.
-
Natural rattan. Beautiful and a good choice for a shaded patio. If you can’t provide shade, choose a different material because its lifespan may be shorter.
-
Steel. A perfectly logical and understandable option for outdoor use, but keep in mind that it may start to rust faster in coastal areas.
When people talk about rattan outdoor furniture for an open patio, they often mention synthetic rattan. It does exist, but honestly, we’re not big fans. The reason is that it’s synthetic, and when you’re sitting in shorts and part of your leg touches it, it’s uncomfortable. We’re always in favor of natural materials, and if you can buy a rattan piece and place it in the shade, that’s a much better choice.
Remember, when you buy furniture, you expect it to last between 5 and 10 years. As for textiles, they last roughly one to three years. You can buy replacement covers to extend your cushions’ lifespan, for example, if you’re not ready to keep buying new ones. With outdoor furniture in Dubai, this is especially important: in two years, that exact fabric might no longer be available.
Terrace, Balcony, or Garden: Different Rules for Each
The balcony in an apartment. It’s usually two to four meters wide and often windy at that height. Rule: fewer, lighter items. Two armchairs and a small outdoor side table will work better than a crammed-in sofa set. Anything a February wind could knock over needs to be weighted down or placed right up against the wall. Plus, an outdoor side table takes up less space than a coffee table, yet it’s still quite functional.
The terrace. The happy medium: there’s enough space for a full-sized outdoor sofa and a table. Plan the path from the door to the railing so the terrace doesn’t turn into a cluttered hallway.
The villa’s garden. Here’s a different challenge: distance. Patio furniture Dubai in the far corner of the lot gets used much less often. Place it so it’s visible from the kitchen or living room. Then, on a calm, not-too-hot day, you’ll definitely want to spend time there.
By the way, do you know what else all three of these spaces have in common? The floor. The fact is, no matter what kind of space you have, a balcony or a large garden, the floor heats up so much during the day that in the evening you’ll definitely need an outdoor rug for comfort.

Lighting the Terrace: The Part People Leave Until Last
The principle is the same as inside the house, but with one limitation: outdoors, there’s no ceiling to reflect light. Therefore, a single bright light source acts like a spotlight, and everything outside its beam falls into darkness.
Instead, there are three levels:
-
at the top, a pendant light or lantern where there’s a canopy
-
at eye level, a lamp on a table or an outdoor side table
-
at the bottom, something warm and subdued at floor level
The rule for light temperature is simple, and it’s precisely what distinguishes a restaurant-like patio from a parking lot-like patio: 2700K, warm white. Outdoors, cool white looks worse than anywhere else.

Practical considerations:
-
Check to see if there’s even an outdoor outlet on the balcony
-
Make sure that the light fixture is actually designed for outdoor use, and not just “looks” like an outdoor fixture
-
If there’s no outlet, battery-powered or solar-powered lights will do the trick
Lighting is the cheapest element, yet it transforms the space the most. This applies to both the balcony and the garden: any garden furniture in Dubai simply goes unused in the evening without lighting.

What Is Not Worth the Money
What we don’t recommend buying, and what to replace it with:
-
A dining set for six or eight people on the terrace. You buy it for just two dinners a year, and the rest of the time it’s in the way. Better to have a table for four and two folding chairs as spares.
-
Cheap umbrellas. The mechanism breaks before the fabric does, usually at the first strong gust of wind. Better to have one high-quality umbrella with a weighted base.
-
White or very light-colored patio upholstery. In a dusty city, you’ll have to wash it every week. Choose medium, earthy tones; dust isn’t visible on them.
-
A set purchased all at once. The sofa outlasts the armchairs, and then nothing matches anyway. It’s better to select the sofa and outdoor dining chairs separately, based on your specific needs. Even if your armchair differs from the sofa, you can choose one that serves as an accent piece.
If you do buy a set, go for rattan outdoor furniture; it’s easier to add individual pieces later.
Remember that it’s best to buy fewer, higher-quality pieces for your patio. Every extra item is one more thing that has to last through the summer. Good patio furniture in Dubai means a few well-chosen pieces, not a lot of random ones.
Where to Start and What to Check Before Ordering
What to Measure Before Ordering:
-
the width of the balcony at its narrowest point
-
the doorway through which the furniture will be carried
-
the height of the railing, because if the sofa’s backrest is higher than the railing, it will block the very view that the patio is meant to offer
Start with three items: seating, one table, and one light fixture. Add pillows, a rug, and a lounge chair once you have a clear idea of how you actually use the space.
Home and Soul is ready to help you select outdoor furniture with a solid understanding of what works best outdoors. We’ve created a separate category, outdoor furniture Dubai, where we’ve gathered furniture that can easily withstand even the brightest sunny days. And if you have any additional questions, write to us, and we’ll help.
Remember, the season lasts five months, and it’s already begun. A terrace only becomes the best room in the apartment if there’s somewhere to sit. A comfortable outdoor sofa, a small outdoor coffee table, and a pair of outdoor dining chairs for dinner: that’s where the right outdoor furniture in Dubai begins.
