Nicholas Blue and White Rug

Nicholas is woven from recycled fibre - the same material as plastic drinks bottles,
spun into yarn - which is why he behaves in a way no natural fibre can. He handles
water, resists stains, and works outdoors as readily as indoors, while looking like a
flatweave cotton rug rather than a synthetic one.

More than 300 bottles go into a single Nicholas rug.

About the pattern and colour.

Navy diamond motifs on a cream ground, arranged in an irregular rhythm rather than a
strict grid, with a hand-knotted fringe at both ends. Graphic enough to give a neutral
room a focal point, restrained enough that it does not dominate. The palette works
against warm woods, rattan and linen as easily as it does against white walls.

About the material.

Hand-woven recycled fibre. The practical consequences are worth spelling out. Water
that lands on it evaporates rather than soaking in. Spills blot off rather than
staining. He can be used on a covered terrace, by a pool or in a high-traffic hallway
without special treatment. And he is genuinely low-maintenance - a light vacuum and the
occasional blot is the whole routine.

The trade-off is underfoot feel. Recycled fibre is flat and hard-wearing rather than
soft and deep. If you want a rug to sink your feet into, a wool pile will serve better;
if you want a rug that survives real life, this is the one.

Where it works.

On a terrace, a balcony or beside a pool. In a hallway or entrance where traffic is
heaviest. In a living room with children or pets. Under a dining table, where the flat
weave lets chairs slide easily and spills wipe up.

Care.

Vacuum lightly and regularly, without a beater brush. Blot spills immediately with a
paper towel or clean cloth rather than rubbing. Trim loose ends with scissors rather
than pulling them. Keep away from sharp objects, hot surfaces and open flames.

Storage.

Store clean and completely dry, in a ventilated space. Roll rather than fold, with the
pattern facing inward.
