Bernadette Solid Square Concrete Coffee Table in Grey

Bernadette is a square coffee table with weight to her - 120 cm across, cast in grey
concrete, sitting low and solid in front of a sofa. Clean lines, no ornament, and a
presence that holds the middle of a room rather than disappearing into it.

She suits a large seating area: a three-seater and an armchair, or an L-shaped sofa
where a square top is reachable from two sides at once. In a small living room she will
dominate - there a smaller or round table serves better.

She's made from solid grey concrete, cast and finished by hand, with a smooth matt
surface that is cool to the touch and lightly textured rather than polished.

About the size.

120 x 120 cm, 38 cm high. That is a generous coffee table, and the rule that decides
whether she fits is simple: a coffee table should run roughly two thirds the length of
your sofa. At 120 cm she suits a sofa of 180 cm or more.

Leave 40 to 45 cm between the table and the sofa - enough to walk past, close enough to
reach a cup without standing up. At 38 cm she sits just below seat height, which is
where a coffee table should be.

About the material.

Handmade concrete, cast individually rather than moulded on a production line, so small
variations in tone and surface texture are part of the material rather than faults in it.

Grey concrete is the forgiving end of the material. It sits comfortably with warm woods,
rattan, linen and jute, and holds its own next to black or charcoal pieces without
competing with them.

She is a two-person lift, which is worth knowing before you decide where she lives -
this is not a table you'll be shifting around on a whim. She also wants a level floor:
concrete on an uneven surface will rock, and no amount of adjusting fixes it.

Honest note on concrete for a coffee table.

Concrete is porous by nature, so it is sealed - but it is not glass. Wine, coffee and
oil will mark if left overnight. The routine is undramatic: wipe spills when they happen,
and re-seal the surface once a year with concrete sealer from any hardware store.

Rings are the one thing worth preventing rather than cleaning. A tray or a coaster under
anything wet saves the annual re-seal from becoming a repair.

Indoor vs outdoor.

Both, with one caveat. She is solid enough for a covered terrace and grey hides far more
than a pale finish would. What she should not do is sit in direct sun year-round - UV
will lighten the tone unevenly over seasons. Under cover, she is fine.

Care.

Damp cloth for daily cleaning. Clean spills when they happen. Re-seal annually. No
bleach, no abrasive scrubs, no rough cloths.
